Spring 2008
More News From Guidance

• Spring brings yet another round of standardized testing, with NYS Science Testing scheduled for both 4th and 8th grades, and Social Studies Testing for 8th grade. In addition, some high school students will be taking Field Tests in the areas of Global Studies, Earth Science and Chemistry. This year we also plan to give the Differential Aptitude Test to all 7th graders, in order to better assess each student’s individual strengths and interests. This will take place at the same time as the Social Studies 8 testing in June.

• Schedules for Final Exams and Regents week will soon be posted on the web page. All students scheduled for Regents or RCT’s will receive a letter regarding when and where, as well.

• All students in grades 6-11 have had the opportunity to select courses for next year, and the master scheduling process is underway. Our hope is to have schedules in students’ hands early in the summer so that any questions or concerns may be dealt with prior to the opening of school.

• 4-year college-bound juniors have hopefully taken or registered to take the SAT sometime this spring. Those students should plan to take it again in the fall. Registration materials for 08-09 testing will probably arrive in the Guidance Office in late August.

• All juniors should be narrowing down their plans for after graduation. If you are college- bound, you should have your schools of choice narrowed down to 4 or 5 to which you plan to apply when you return to school in the fall. The application process will begin in October! Mrs. LeRoy will be working with seniors individually and in classroom groups to prepare for this process, and a informational evening for parents and students will be held in September as well.

• Seniors are gearing up for end-of-year activities, culminating in Commencement Ceremonies on June 27th. It is important that, during this exciting time, seniors remember that they still have work to do in all of their classes that is critical to their success. We expect all of our seniors will be able to walk across the stage with their class!

• Keep in mind that summer school is usually offered in Catskill and Stamford, and Hunter-Tannersville makes re-takes of Regents exams available as well. Students who fail core courses are encouraged to take advantage of that opportunity to stay on track with their course requirements. Registration materials for summer school will be available in the WAJ Guidance Office by the time school lets out for the summer. Students must register in person at the summer school of their choice on designated dates.

GUIDANCE PROGRAM
The guidance program assist students as they select courses, plan for their future, and solve problems that arise during the school year. Our goal is that every student graduate from Windham-Ashland-Jewett properly prepared for their chosen future. Assistance with college applications, scholarship searches, and employment options is always available.

Elementary students will work with the counselor in classrooms, small groups, and individually. Character education, coping skills, peer relationships, and mental, physical and substance abuse avoidance are but a small part of the topics with which the counselor works. Parents are encouraged to contact the Elementary Counselor to discuss concerns you may have about your child.

Students in grades 7-12 and their parents are encouraged to get to know the Secondary Counselor. Arranging parent-teacher conferences, course selectionand scheduling, college preparation, and the application process are all part of the counselor’s role. Many resources are available in the Guidance Office, and parents and students are encouraged to take advantage of them.

Parents are particularly encouraged to meet with the counselor beginning in the spring of the junior year to begin planning for college selection or other secondary plans. Various informational documents will be sent home and posted on the Windham-Ashland-Jewett website throughout the school year for your convenience. The Guidance Office has an open door policy, but if your time is limited, please call (518)734-3400 x202 to schedule an appointment.
