A listing of some scholarship and honors opportunities for seniors

Read Deadlines and Criteria Carefully
1. The Steinhardt School of Education Scholarships at New York University: for students who excel academically, demonstrate a dedication to serving others and want to work with young people as teachers. Scholarships valued at $1,000 to $15,000 annually based on merit and need.
2. Veterans of Foreign Wars Scholarship Programs: including the Voice of Democracy Audio Essay and Patriot’s Pen Essay Contest and newly added Veterans Tribute Scholarship available to children and grandchildren of Veterans and those currently in uniform.
3. Coca-Cola Scholar Program: awards 250 scholarships nationally each year. Students may apply on line for this scholarship by October 31st.
4. Scholarships for Academic Excellence: awarded by the New York State Legislature. Regents test scores or approved alternative scores are used as selection criteria.
5. Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarships: federally funded scholarship that is allocated by county. Eligible students must have minimum average of 95 and 1250 SAT (or 28 ACT if SAT not taken). Scholarships are 4-year renewable, $1500 awards.
6. Ithaca College, Park Scholar Awards: for students accepted in the Park School of Communications, with 1350 SAT, top 4% of the graduating class. Application to Park School of Communications deadline is December 15th, Scholarship application deadline is January 15th.
7. Ithaca College, Martin Luther King Jr. Scholar Program: for traditionally underrepresented students applying for admission to Ithaca College, application includes an essay and letter of recommendation. Finalists will be brought to Ithaca College for an interview. Deadline is December 15th.
8. NYS PTA Jenkins Memorial Scholarship: for students planning to major in education. WAJ may nominate two students. Interested students must have application submitted to Guidance for consideration by December 15th.
9. Johnson and Wales National Outstanding Student Leader of the Year Competition: scholarship competition for students planning to attend Johnson and Wales. Requires travel to Denver for final portion of competition of selected. Entry deadline is January 5th.
10. 2005 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards: Any student grades 5-12 may apply for this honor, if you have been involved in outstanding community service activities in the past 2 years. Deadline to Guidance by Oct. 31st, 2005.
11. NYS Society or Professional Engineers’ Capital District Chapter: for students who intend to study engineering. Application deadline is December 1st.
12. Danforth Scholars Program: for Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri, seeking candidates who have exhibited service and leadership as well as embracing a challenging academic program successfully.
13. Toyota Community Scholars Program: one student may be nominated per school. Academic excellence is a prime factor, but the most important characteristic in the nominee will be the overall impact of the student’s contribution in the area of community service.
14. Boston University College of Engineering Scholarship Examination Competition: 4-year full-tuition scholarships to Boston University awarded to at least ten of the top scorers nationwide whose HS records also demonstrate high academic achievement and who are accepted to Boston University. Test is Sun. November 14th. Deadline to register for exam is October 29th.
15. Engineering College Scholarships: sponsored by the Capital District Chapter of the NYS Society of Professional Engineers, Inc. for graduating seniors who intend to study engineering. 90 average or better. Application deadline is December 1st
16. Burger King Scholars: One senior may be nominated from our school to compete for this scholarship opportunity. Candidate must have 85 average, be employed year-round, at least 15 hours per week, participate in community service and demonstrate financial need. Students interested in being considered should see Mrs. LeRoy by December 5th.
17. NFIB Free Enterprise Scholars Award: interested students must be nominated by a member of the National Federation of Independent Business (contact information for this group available in Guidance). $1,000 non-renewable scholarship to recognize young people who have demonstrated entrepreneurial spirit and initiative.
18. Educational Communications Scholarship: awards 1-$6,000, 10-$5,000, 20-$2500, and 96-$1,000 scholarships based on academic ability, activities and financial need. Applications may be acquired through the Guidance Office and must be mailed to the sponsoring organization by May 15th. A $3.50 processing fee is required.
19. The Law, Youth and Citizenship and community Service Recognition Award: sponsored by the NYS Bar Foundation, in cooperation the Law, Youth and Citizenship Program of the NYS Education Department and NYS Bar Association, and recognizes students for their involvement in community service work. One student from each judicial district in NYS will receive a $1,000 savings bond and will be invited to attend an awards dinner in Albany in April. Eligible students must have experience in a law-education related club or course, be enrolled in public school in NYS, and have contributed time and energy to a community service organization or project without financial or academic advancement awarded. Completed applications are due to the sponsoring organization by February 3rd.
20. New York State World Trade Center Memorial Scholarships: sponsored by NYS Higher Education Services Corporation for survivors or dependents of deceased or severely and permanently injured victims of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks or the subsequent rescue and recovery efforts. This includes victims at the WTC, Pentagon and all of the fights involved that day. The award covers up to four years of full-time undergraduate study (an amount equal to SUNY 4-year college tuition, fees, room and board, books and supplies cost). Completed applications must be submitted by May 1st.
21. Dorothea Deitz Memorial Scholarship: sponsored by women in physical education in New York State to provide financial assistance to selected women students planning to major in Physical Education Teacher Education. The amount of the scholarships vary from year to year. The award is based on character, academic achievement, physical education competence, participation in athletics, qualities of leadership and financial need. Requests for application should be made through an area chairperson and must be returned by March 1.
22. SUNY Morrisville Foundation and Presidential Scholarships: merit-based scholarships for students interested in attending SUNY Morrisville. Students with a minimum GPA of 80 and 900 SAT or 22 ACT will be considered for the Foundation Scholarship. A high school average of at least 90 and a minimum 1000 SAT or 24 ACT is needed for consideration for a Presidential Scholarship ($8,000 for two years of study). Students must maintain a GPA of 2.5 to maintain the scholarship. Completed applications must be returned to the college by December 1.
23. SUNY Brockport Scholarships: several academic scholarships available: Distinguished Scholar offers a “full ride” valued at $40,000 over four years for valedictorians or salutatorians who have a 96 or higher high school average and a 1250 SAT or 27 ACT; Presidential Scholar offers free room and partial board for students (valued at $18,000) for students with a 93 high school GPA and 1200 SAT or 26 ACT; Dean’s Scholar offers partial board up to four years (valued at $10,000) for students in the top 25% of class, 90 high school GPA and 1100 SAT or 24 ACT. All scholarships require application to SUNY Brockport.
24. American Society of Military Comptrollers Scholarship: one national scholarship for $1,000 and one local scholarship of $200 to high school seniors entering a field related to financial/resource management (business administration, economics, public administration, computer science or operations research related financial management, accounting or finance). Selection based on academics, three letters of recommendation and a justification statement of need. Completed applications must be submitted to the sponsoring organization by February 28th.
25. Chevrolet Michelle Kwan R.E.W.A.R.D.S. Scholarship: national competition recognizes 10 outstanding female high school graduates who are involved in athletics and provides a $5,000 scholarship, payable over four years. Eligible students must have 3.2 (88) GPA or higher, have demonstrated both academic and athletic excellence through school teams, intramural activities, organized athletic clubs or other community-based sports organization, demonstrated leadership and community involvement, demonstrated financial need and continued involvement in athletics at the college level. Completed applications must be postmarked by March 31st.
26. Sammy Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year Award: a $7500 college scholarship available to outstanding scholar athletes, judged on five criteria: academic performance (35%), athletic excellence (35%) leadership (15%), community service (10%) and milk experience (5%). Applications will only be accepted on-line at www.whymilk.com until March 7th.
27. Golub Foundation Scholarships: the parent company of Price Chopper, the Golub Foundation offers ten different scholarships for graduating high school students, with various qualifications such as demonstrated leadership, community service by minority students, pursuit of a career in education, being a Price Chopper Associate, or child/grandchild of one, pursuit of a two-year degree, pursuit of a career in health care or computers, or hospitality/tourism/culinary arts. Completed applications must be postmarked by March 15th.
28. Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship: a $300 award is available for a senior planning to enter the field of education. Deadline April 30th.
29. National Honor Society Scholarships: WAJ can nominate one of its NHS members to compete in the state and national competition. Applications are available through the NHS advisor. The deadline is around January 15th.
30. New York State Academy of Family Physicians Scholarship: scholarship of $500 is open to college bound seniors planning on becoming family physicians. The deadline is around March 11th.
31. New York State Lottery Leaders of Tomorrow Scholarship: one scholarship is allotted to each NYS High School in the amount of $4,000 (paid $1,000 per year) to attend a college, university or trade school. Eligibility requirements are: hardworking students who are active in extracurricular and community activities and have demonstrated leadership skills. Completed applications and essays need to be turned into the local school by early March so that a committee can select two nominees that are sent on to the state committee for selection.
32. Phi Beta Kappa International Scholarships: various grants are awarded to students majoring in education. Recipients are selected based on the following criteria: academic standing, the essay, a letter of recommendation, school activities and community activities. Application deadline is March 19th.
33. Disabled American Veterans Scholarship: a $500 scholarship available to the spouse, child or grandchild of an honorably discharged, wartime, disabled veteran. Basis for the award is a combination of the applicant’s relation to the veteran, academic achievement, SAT/ACT score, school and community service and letters of recommendation. Application deadline is April 15th.
34. New York State AFL-CIO 2005 Scholarship: a four year scholarship to a 2005 graduate who intends to pursue a career in labor relations or a related field. $2,000 per year for 4 years, plus the opportunity to work for AFL-CIO as an intern when such positions are available. Deadline is April 15th
35. Empire State Potato Growers Inc.: for undergraduate students pursuing, in NYS, a course of study benefiting the agricultural industry. $500 per year for four years. Application deadline is January 15th.
36. Capital District Chapter of Superintendents of Buildings and Grounds Scholarship: to provide tuition assistance to a member’s immediate family or a student from a member’s school district for a student pursuing a vocational career related to facilities management. Review of application will begin in mid-April. 2-$1,000 scholarships will be awarded in June.
37. 2006 Sam Walton Community Scholarship Program: now available on-line for the student’s convenience. Interested applicants may log on to www.walmartfoundation.org in order to access the application. Students must have the nearest Wal-Mart Store/SAM’s Club 4-digit location number in order to complete the application process, which may be obtained from your nearest Wal-Mart location. Deadline for entry is February 1st. In order to be eleigible, the student must be graduating in 2006 and may not be a Wal-Mart Associate of the child or legal dependent of a Wal-Mart Associate.
38. First Pioneer Farm Credit, ACA: is offering a $1,000 college scholarship for students interested in a career in agriculture. A brief application along with an essay is required to apply. Application deadline is April 15th.
39. St. John Fisher College Foreign Language Scholarships: for students applying for admission to St. John Fisher, proficiency in French German, Italian or Spanish and a minimum 1000 SAT or 21 ACT.
40. Best Buy Scholarships: awarded to high school seniors dedicated to helping their communities. Visit www.BestBuy.com and click on Community Relations. Apply by February 15th.
41. NY Water Environment Association Scholarship: two awards of $500 to students enrolled in an environmental related curriculum at the undergraduate level (ie. Biology, forestry, chemistry, engineering etc.). Application must be completed and included with an official transcript and two letters of recommendation. Materials available in Guidance.
42. The Drexel University “Write a 10 Page Screenplay”: plus an application and send it in by April 1s . See Mrs. LeRoy for information.
43. Tri-County Council Vietnam Era Veterans: awarding 4- $1,000 scholarships to area seniors who are dependents of veterans of all conflicts or currently on active duty or those who have been honorable discharged. Deadline is April 1st. See Mrs. LeRoy for instructions and application.
44. The Community Foundation of Dutchess County Announcing the 2005 Miles of Hope Breast Cancer Foundation Scholarship: for students who have been affected by breast cancer in some way. Applications may be downloaded at www.communityfoundationdc.org or www.milesofhopebc.org . Deadline is April 20th.
45. The Siena College Program for Sustainable Land Use – Writing Scholarship: providing scholarships for excellence in environmental writing. See Mrs. LeRoy for information. Deadline is March 18th.
46. Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York: for students who are related to a firefighter in an affiliated member organization of the Association. Applications are available online at www.firedistrnys.com . Deadline is March 15th.
47. Hudson Valley Community College Scholarship Opportunities: for students planning to enroll at HVCC. See Mrs. LeRoy for information. Deadline is March 12th.
48. The Amy Blindelglass Memorial Scholarship: created by the Center for Donation and Transplant. Applicants must write a convincing persuasive essay on a topic related to organ donation. See Mrs. LeRoy for the topic and information. Deadline is April 1st.
49. Steven and Scott Nicholson Memorial Scholarship: for students who are the son or daughter of a school transportation department personnel member working for dues paying member of the Capital Area Chapter of the Head Mechanics’ Association and a member of CASDA. See Mrs. LeRoy for information and application. Deadline is June 15th.
50. Ulster-Greene ARC 2006 Greene County Scholarship: for students who have been accepted to a college program that will enable them to pursue a profession benefiting people with developmental disabilities. See Mrs. LeRoy for application and information. Deadline is March 25th.
51. American Society of Civil Engineers, Mohawk-Hudson Section: a $1500 annual scholarship competition open to graduating seniors who intend to enroll in a major curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Science Degree in Civil Engineering. Applications are available in Guidance or online at www.asce.org/kids. Applications with essay and transcript are due by April 15th.
52. Horatio Alger Association Scholarship Programs: for college-bound juniors who have financial need and have exhibited integrity and perseverance in overcoming personal adversity. Current juniors may apply from June 1-October 15 2005.
