Mrs. Scary's Third Grade

Classroom News

Third graders have been busy this year. In Language Arts the students have been reading many books. They are improving their paragraph writing skills by writing about what they are reading. An in-depth study of Mark Twain took place during the winter. The students read a biography of Mark Twain and an excerpt from his book Tom Sawyer. They then had to find similarities and differences in the two books and write about them. At this time the students are reading and writing about Antarctica.

The Math concepts we have been working on include learning all the basic multiplication and division facts. These must be practiced each night until the student knows them by heart. It is very important for the students to remember these facts when they enter fourth grade.

In Science we have recently begun a study of forces and simple machines. The students are learning the six simple machines and how they work together to form compound machines.

Many of the Social Studies lessons are included in Language Arts. The students have been reading and reporting on continents. So far, we have read about North America, South America, and Antarctica. Each morning a different student is responsible for reading, answering, and reporting the “Geography Question of the Day” to the entire class. The students have also filled in maps of the world and a map of the United States.

Please make sure to ask your child about what he/she has learned in school each day.

Math News

The third graders have been working on several Math concepts. During September, the students reviewed place value of numbers up to the hundreds place then learned the value of numbers up to the hundred thousands place.
Estimating and Rounding are the skills we have been practicing for the past several weeks. One “real world” use for rounding can take place when you go shopping. It would be beneficial for students to practice this skill while shopping in the grocery store. When an item is placed in the cart, round the price to the nearest ten cents, dollar, or ten dollars. While waiting in line to check out, estimate the total cost of the groceries.
Currently the students are learning to add large numbers as well as columns of numbers. Practicing the basic addition and subtraction facts is important. Third grade students should know these facts without hesitation. Knowing these facts will help the students with the more difficult work coming this year in Math.
